Lava:

Lava is a beautiful Himalayan suburb, situated at the foothill of the Himalayas. It is hidden behind the misty clouds and one of the best getaways in North Bengal. The pristine Himalayan destination is situated at an elevation approx 2195m(7200ft) and located in the eastern part of Kalimpong District. The name(the literal meaning of LAVA) and the ambience is diametrical. As it is one of the few Hill Stations in West Bengal which receives snowfall in winter. Lava is the threshold of Neora Valley National Park and is beautifully adorned by abruptly rising hills and numerous small streams. On the way to lava, you can witness that this hill station is bestowed with scenic landscape and the change in vegetation from tropical deciduous to wet Alpine trees of Fir, Pine and Birch will surely lift your vacation mode in no time. Lava has gradually become one of the most favourite tourist destinations in this part of Himalaya, which made tourism a source of living for the local inhabitants.

Historically this part of Himalayan region carries the similar(if not the same) background as lava, like the neighbouring regions(Algarah and Pedong), is situated on the ancient silk route. And the natives were the tenants of last Lepcha King Gyalso Achuk.

Rishop:

Rishop, Rishyap or as locally known Rishab is a small Himalayan hamlet and is considered to be one of the best offbeat destinations in West Bengal. In Tibetian Language Rishop stands as ‘Ri’ - ‘Mountain peak’ and ‘shop’ - ‘age-old trees’. These beautiful hamlets standing over the floating clouds(at an elevation of approx 2591meters or 8500feets). This tranquil Himalayan hamlet has some resemblances with the beautiful Japanese Village ‘Gokayama’, as it is one of the rare virgin site or landscape which is entirely enveloped in a forest of pine, birch, fir, colourful rhododendrons and orchids. The beauty enhances in many folds as a mesmerising view of the vast range of Kanchenjunga and other Himalayan snow cap peaks. Here the temperature ripples between 7*c to 20*c. You can take the motorable rocky route(11km) or hike through steep mountain roads(4km) to explore this hidden beauty.

Unlike Ichhe Gaon, in 1998 the Forest Department directly(with the help of some organisation and with the locals) engaged in promoting this village under the umbrella of Eco-tourism. There are some points or Dara’s which offers a 360* degree view of mesmerizing mountain ranges(mt. Kokthang, Kabru, Pandim, Kanchenjunga, Narsingh, Siniolchu etc). At night, due to redundancy of artificial lights, Rishop appears as nothing less than heaven under the calming moonlight. The small light dots decorating the mountains on the opposite side hiding behind the small patch of cotton clouds and the continuous tantalizing squeal of unknown insects coming out at the backdrop is very soothing and makes it a worthy moment to experience. As it is a relatively new offbeat destination, thus restaurants, drinks, food stores or shopping facilities would be too much to expect. However, if you are a nature lover and want to spend a few days in the arms of Mother nature then Rishop is one of those places which should be top of your bucket list.

Kolakham:

Kolakham is another beautiful small sleepy Himalayan hamlet located 10 km away from Lava. This offbeat Himalayan destination is relatively new as compared to the other destination of this region. Kolakham is situated in the outer arms of the Neora Valley National park facing the eastern Himalayan peaks, at an elevation of 1981m(6500ft). Neora Valley forest is a home of the Red Panda, the Musk Deer and the Clouded Leopard, Leopard, Bison etc. Because of the adjacent biodiversifing national park, this place is enriched with various plants, birds, insects, and animals which includes endangered species.

Like other places, Kolakham also offers a majestic view of Mt Kanchenjunga and other adjoint peaks however, the ambience of this place makes a big difference. In the morning the beautiful chirping of birds and the fresh warm sunlight tickles you to wake up early. The lazy cotton-like clouds helping the mountains to hide behind will energies you. You can take a walk around this beautiful village or if you are an adventure lover or loves to watch birds in its natural habitat then you can opt for a hike in the forest with experienced guides. At night the fur mountains look like a jewellery box (as the lights are coming from the opposite mountains) from the valley. Next day with the rise of the sun the same thing repeats itself(except in bad weather conditions) interestingly these repetitions will not make you feel bored.

The road to reach this beautiful Himalayan hamlet is little adventurous as it the serpentine rocky route goes through the outer layer of the Neora Valley National(as per the government rule no paved road can be built in those restricted areas so that the nature Inhabitat can venture without any kind of disturbance). However, the twisting twinging journey will automatically vanish the moment you enter the threshold of Kolakham. The welcoming gesture of the neighbouring jungle, the calm and tranquil ambience will no doubt work as a repellent of your journey.

Lava, Rishop, Kolakham is one of the best trio junctions rare or can be honoured as one of the best destinations in the eastern Kalimpong rather eastern Himalayan region, as these destinations can be moulded in any form of tours be it a family holiday, offbeat, adventure or educational tours. This unique combo is of that nature which should be in your bucket list.

Things to do in Lava, Rishop & Kolakham

Neora Valley National Park

The neora valley national park is a global biodiversity hotspot and recognised as the World Heritage site. Spreading over an area of 88 square km, It stands at an elevation of approx 3200m. It was earmarked in 1986 by the Indian Government and was notified as the National Park in1992(under Wildlife Protection Act 1972). It shares its boundary with Sikkim(Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary), Bhutan(Toorsa Strict Reserve), Champasari Wildlife Sanctuary in Siliguri, and Gorumara National park in Jalpaiguri. This park has challenged the never-ending human interference, biotope changes and environmental pollution. It has preserved its natural biodiversity and much of the national park still has inaccessible forests in its territory. The forest consists of mixed species of flora like beautiful orchids, rhododendron, bamboo, oak, ferns, sal, etc. There are also many rare species of animals like Leopard, Himalayan Black Bear, Yellow Throated Marten, Red Fox, Sambhar, Kakar (Barking Deer), Leopard Cat and Ghoral (Mountain Goat). If you are a nature or a bird lover, then visiting the National Park is a must.

Neora Valley Interpretation Centre and Experience neora

Before beginning your journey. Take time to visit the neora Valley Interpretation Centre, which is in Lava. It remains open throughout the week except Thursday(timing 8a.m.-12p.m. / 1p.m. - 4p.m.). This is important and advisable to understand the do’s and don'ts and what the park has to offer(it makes it easy and safe while you are in the jungle). However, it is to be noted that the jungle trail has no motorable road(entirely). There is a halt called Zero point which is about 10 to 12km away from the entrance. After that, you have to trek a jungle trail and can be very muddy if it rains under the guide's instructions. At the entrance of the forest, there is a small cottage where a government authorized guide is available. You will have experience of your life on this trek. Which will expand your adventure and enable you to closely explore the birdlife, colourful butterflies as well as diverse flora and fauna. He can take you for a trek through the forest. The whole journey may take 2-3 hours(depending upon you). However, it will remain as an asset for life as a wild experience.

Rachela Pass

Rachela Pass is a junction between Sikkim , Bhutan and Bengal . Rachela Pass is the trade route between India (Sikkim) and Bhutan. It is located at an elevation of 3152 meters, one of the lesser-explored trails. In the past, Rachela pass was the central point of the trade route tri-junction. You can witness the trails and four major ridges dividing the valleys of Neora Rishi, Jaldhaka and Rangli, holding its dwindling history(evidence). The trekking route is 12 km from Lava through the Neora Valley Nature Reserve, however, it is difficult and steep. The trek begins near Mulkharka village. From Rachela Pass, other passes of Jelep La and Nathu La are visible. Also visible are the Singalila Range with its proud peak Kanchenjunga and also the entire Chola Range. This Trek route goes through the uninhabited virgin tracks of sub-tropical alpine forest. The jungle trail of Neora Valley is through virgin forests of bamboo and pine that are less explored. The forests are thick and dense and you can feel the silence of the forest here. Especially, if you are an adventure-loving enthusiast visiting this treasure of Flora & fauna will not leave you empty-handed.

Kagyu Thekchen Ling Monastery

Kagyu Thekchen Ling Monastery is popularly known as the Lava Monastery is situated at a walking distance from the Lava bus stand. Accepting the offer of a 4-acre site by the local Buddhist community, the Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche bestowed the empowerment of Chenrezig to more than 4,000 devotees on the 15 th day of the 1 st Tibetan month of the Fire Hare year, 1987, and agreed to the community’s request to establish a monastery there to support and preserve the religious tradition and culture of the people. This monastery is adorned with beautiful Tibetian Architecture. The buildings and the pillars are made using brick and concrete, having bright and colourful shades(mostly red and golden colour). From its huge open area, you can witness the entire valley, mountains and the portion of neora valley national park hiding behind gipsy mists and cotton-like clouds. Inside, monks can be seen occupied in a rigorous study of Buddhist literature and meditation. In the atmosphere of quiet, remote seclusion aspiring to become Acharyas in higher Buddhist philosophy engage intensively in prayers, studies, and debate.

LoleGaon

Lolegaon or Loleygaon is a quaint Himalayan hamlet of the easter Himalayan region. This sleepy and calm village is located 24kms away from Lava, situated at an altitude of 1675 metres. This Lepcha village(as a large number of the native belongs to the Lepcha community) offers a majestic view of the Mt.Kanchenjunga and Himalayan range through whitish cotton clouds whimsically floating around. The exotic and rustic nature of this village at the backdrop of mountains of the Himalayas will leave you with precious memories. This village falls on the trade route of Bhutan and is decorated with pine forests and cypress forests. You can also see a range of orchids and other flowering plantations here. Like other neighbouring tourist places, It is also a great place for bird watchers. Even though modern technology has infiltrated here but somehow the sloppy village has been able to hold its rustic beauty in the same manner as it was at the beginning.

Canopy Walk

The Canopy Walk is one of the most popular attractions of Lolegaon. It is a 180 metres long hanging bridge which takes you through the dense forest of the mountains. There is a ticket counter at the entrance. Once you buy the entry ticket (Rs. 25 per person), you will need to walk through the forest for a few minutes before you reach the hanging bridge to take the Canopy Walk. The bridge slowly rises in height and you will find yourself walking through the treetops amidst dense forest. At the start, there are few stairs to climb to the bridge and then you start the fairly long walk at a height and through the jungle. Look around in the forest and you can see many different kinds of birds here. It's an amazing experience. This is only a one-way walk and lasts for a few minutes. There are also restrictions to the maximum number of persons who can walk simultaneously on the bridge. You get down from the other side and walk back below the bridge. If you want, you can explore the forest even beyond the bridge after getting down at the other end.

Tiffin Dara

In the native(Lepcha) language dara means hilltop, Tiffin Dara and Ghanti Dara are located close to Rishop and is about 3 km uphill from here(though it is not so difficult). And is located at an altitude of around 2,360 meters . It offers a breathtaking 360* degree view of Mt.Kanchenjunga and other Himalayan Range ( Mt. Kharg, Kokthang, Rathung, Kabru, Talung, Pandim, Kanchenjunga, Simvo, Narsingh and Mt. Siniolchu.) You will also be able to see some parts of the famous Nathula and Jelepla passes. It may take 40 to 50 minutes to reach on the top. From there It feels like paradise on earth when you see the skyline on top of the mountain and the panoramic view. The best part of this trek is that it goes through the dense forest filled with birch, pine, fir trees and different varieties of orchids. Chirping birds and some mountainous dogs might accompany you through the journey. It is one of the best places to visit(hike) if you are a nature lover or birdwatcher or an adventure lover. ( avoid rainy, winter or hush season to trek )

Jhandi Dara

Another Dara or hilltop, like its neighbouring Dara’s it offers a spectacular view of the sun rising behind the snow-capped mountain peaks on a clear day. However what makes it unique is that from the top you can witness the plains of Dooars, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kanchenjunga and Nathula from a single viewpoint. It is about 4/5 km from the rishop. Jhandi Dara offers a beautiful trail through the dense green trees views at sunrise like its neighbouring Daras. It also offers ample opportunities for capturing amazing photographs, especially at the time of sunrise. Besides, the viewpoint is a perfect retreat for nature lovers and birdwatchers. (avoid rainy, winter or hush season to trek)

Changey Falls

It is a true artistry of Mother Nature. Changey Falls is a waterfall where chilly water gushing drowns, cutting from high above (50 m in height) and disappearing into the lush foliage below. It is considered to be the tallest in this Himalayan region and is located at the distance of approx 4.5km from Kolkham and approx 12- 14km from Lava. Geologically, along with others, it plays a vital role as the continuous flow provides water. Visually, The quiet surrounding with the rushing sound of the water will be no less than melody to your ears. On a clear day, the white peaks of the Kanchenjunga adorning this beautiful falls and the greenery of the Neora Valley National Park looks stunning. However, most parts of the road are boulder roads, you have to walk down to the falls which may take 20 minutes(as it is not a motorable way). If you happen to be there when there are hardly any tourists, you can hear the songs of Cicadas and many other singing birds as the water gushes down from a height with a roaring sound. ( avoid rainy, winter or hush season to visit )

Samthar Plateau

Samther, at a distance of 42km from lava, is a picturesque (pre-independent like) village and it can be called as one of the best offbeat cum honeymoon Himalayan destinations. Far from modern civilization, far from city pollution, this mountain village offers a unique natural resort where nature opens wide with a majestic landscape. The undulating hill slopes, interlocking valleys covered with lush green forests, numerous small and medium streams cutting across the valley to reach the distant plains, terraced agricultural lands, thatched cottages, hospitable Lepcha community all combine to mark the landscape of Samthar. It stands amidst an arc of hills at an elevation of approx 1400 Meters. The forested hills in Samthar have some rare collections of flora and fauna. The journey to Samthar is bit tough and the terrain goes through densely forested hills comprising oaks, pines, juniper in a perennial mossy and moist atmosphere you reach the Samthar Village. The road ends at Samthar Farm House, which is the starting point for some more fabulous treks. Samthar, an offbeat destination in the Kalimpong hills, is growing in popularity mostly to the foreigners for its tranquillity, pristine environment, friendly people and of course for the brilliant view of majestic Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak of the world. Charkhole

This Himalayan hamlet is the latest edition in the offbeat tourist destination and is probably one of the best-located places to view the majestic Kanchenjunga in its true colours in this region. Thus, It is getting its momentum in any folds as compared to others in the same region. It is approx 15km away from Lolegaon. The dense forest of towering pine, oak, fir. Cypress, the variety of rhododendrons, the sweet melody of rare birds, will accompany you throughout the journey. The place offers unlimited relaxation throughout your tour. It is also the best hide-out destination and that is why Charkhole is becoming the popular destination for Honeymoon couples and nature lovers tourists. .If you want a small holiday out of a maddening crowd close to many otherwise unseen birds, flora fauna, great weather, good foods, campfire and above all great Kanchenjunga Charkhole should be on the top of your wishlist.
