Pedong:

Pedong is a small and buzzing Himalayan town, situated to the eastern side, at a distance of 22km from Kalimpong. And standing at an elevation of approx 1240m(4100ft). It is believed that pedong got its name from pine trees, which abundantly encircled this Himalayan hill station. However, in Bhutia language, Pedong means “ A Place full of fir trees”. This mountain town offers a beautifully organised forest, lush green valley and a panoramic view of Mt.Kanchenjunga and Himalayan mountain range in an overwhelming way. It is divided into two parts: upper and lower Pedong.

Pedong is one of the oldest towns in this region and has witnessed a long-standing historical significance(The Lepcha-Bhutan feud and Anglo British war). It lies on the historic silk route that connects India and Lhasa via Jelepla Pass. It was under the kingdom of the Last Lepcha King, and the Bhutanese Kingdom. Later after the 1864 anglo-Bhutan war, Pedong was ceded to British India. Before this war, a large number of people(mostly Nepalese) immigrated here and started living with Lepchas and Bhutia who were natives of this place. Thus, a cultural blend can be seen here. Earlier Pedong used to be a trading halt on silk-route for India-Tibet.

This Himalayan town is rich in avifauna and a paradise for ornithologists. In recent years, there has been a considerable increase in bird population due to the increase in forest cover and the increasing awareness regarding the ecosystem amongst the villagers. Various species of Himalayan and lowland birds can be seen around Pedong. This place offers various activities which are mostly nature oriented such as nature exploration, jungle hiking and picnic, Birdwatching, rock climbing, Fisher or camping. The villages near Pedong include Sakyong, Kasyong, Dalep, Kagey, Upper Menchu and Lower Menchu offers a great opportunity to explore.

Kashyam / Kasyaong:

Kashyam or Kasyaong a magical wonderland and one of the best offbeat Himalayan destinations in the region. Situated 8 away from the pedong bazaar(to the northeast side). This village is surrounded by beautiful and undiluted sceneries and greeneries. Just behind the village, a wonderful view of the union of Teesta River and Rongpo River will no doubt make you speechless. Nature admirers can also visit nearby Ranibon that has been declared as a preserved forest. A 300-year old Lepcha house, which is the only specimen, showcasing the delicate Lepcha craftworks. The museum, which will show the culture of the Lepcha community, will be another attraction for the tourists who come here. The scenic beauty of Kashyone village truly offers visual splendour.

Things to do in Pedong

Tinchuley Viewpoint

In the native language, where three ridge meets it is called Tinchley. There is a viewpoint bearing the same name in Darjeeling(they are not the same). It is considered to be the highest point in this region and offers a 180-degree view of the mountain range of Darjeeling, Sikkim and Part of Bhutan. From here you can see a mesmerising view of river Teesta, Mt.kanchenjunga and other snow-capped mountains. It also gives you a clear view of cities like Sikkim Kalimpong and Darjeeling. And above the dense forest and Tarrance of green paddy field, you can see the Nathula pass and Jelepla pass.

Rikkisum Viewpoint

Another beautiful viewpoint, which offers a 360-degree view of Mt.Kanchenjunga. It is considered to be one of the best viewpoints in this entire region. However, the approach road from the main road to the hilltop, as it is in deplorable condition. However, for the hikers and adventure lover, it is a good trail to explore. There was a beautiful British bungalow at the top of the hill but sadly it was burnt down in 1984 agitation. The sunrise which makes the mighty Kanchenjunga as the golden tip mountain will no doubt soothe your soul.

Damsang Fort & Sillery Gaon

Damsang Gudi or Damsang Fort can be said as the only fort in this Himalayan region. Around 1690 it was built by the Lepcha King Gyalso Achuk to defend the attacks from the Bhutanese. According to folklore, it was built in a single night with the help of spirits who brought smooth stones from the Reshi River. It is also said that the king himself had supernatural powers. However, in reality, it can be said that it is only a historic outcome of the long ethnic war between Lapchaps and Bhutias (during 17th century A.D.). In 1864 it was captured by the British. Though remaining of damsang fort are what is leftover but the trail is a little adventurous and perfectly suitable for a small jungle safari. It can be accessed from different sides(Icche Gaon, Algarah, Pedong) by hiking through dense forest. At present, the Lepcha community celebrates their King Birth anniversary every year in December.

Sangchen Dorjee Monastery

A walking distance of around one and a half kilometres from Pedong, Sangchen Dorjee Monastery is one of the oldest monasteries in Pedong-Kalimpong region and was built during the rule by the Bhutanese. The monastery was established around the early 1780 AD. It provides historical insight into the history and culture of the place. Sangchen Dorjee Gumba (Gumpa) also has fresco paintings on the inner walls of the main chamber depicting Tantric Buddhism. Gumpa Dance (Chyaam dance) or the Buddhist Mask dance is also held here annually. It has now become the centre of Shabdrung Rinpoche (known as the Dharma Raja of Bhutan). The last Shabdrung Rimpoche had relocated to Pedong and expired a few years ago. His human form has been preserved at Pedong and has been encased in a Stupa/Chorten on an auspicious day. The place has become an important pilgrimage for the Bhutanese and other followers of the Drukpa Khargu tradition of Buddhism.

Cross Dara(Cross Hill)

Within a walking distance from Pedong bazaar has another highlight known as the Cross Hill (Cross Dara). Placed by priest Fr. Augustine Desgodins in 1882 AD on his way to Tibet. In the attempt to share the wisdom of Christianity the journey to Tibet Mission a lot of Evangelists lost their lives or never came back from Tibet. In memory of the Evangelists who lost their lives, Fr. Augustine Desgodins erected the cross at a vantage point facing Tibet directly with a hope that someday the Evangelists may return. It is considered to have miraculous powers and is a pilgrimage site for the many local Christians. Cross Hill is located at such a point wherein the view of the facing mountains is really magnificent. From here one can get a glimpse of Tibet and the People's Republic of the Chinese border. It is a perfect sunset point.

Sillery Gaon

In recent years Sillery gaon has got its momentum as an offbeat tourist destination in this Himalayan region. It is a small Himalayan hamlet surrounded by dense green forest and offers a beautiful view of Mt.Kanchenjunga from the porch of your stay. You can see the airstrip of Sikkim and the aeroplanes landing and flying off from there. If you are an adventure lover then you can take the forest route via Damsung Fort by hiking or you can hire a taxi from the pedong bus stand.

Reshi Khola

Reshi Khola or Rishi Khola is one of the fastest-growing offbeat destinations in the Himalayan region. It is situated at a distance of 15 km from pedong bazaar. It is flaked along with the banks of the river. Riverside camping is of the most favoured adventure activities here, gaining its momentum in recent years.

Silent Valley

it is a vast green field located in the resort of pedong. As the name suggests you will experience a perfect silent place except the chirping of birds and the insect. It resembles Khajjiar which is in Himachal Pradesh and often called as Mini Switzerland by the visitors. The beautiful place is surrounded by Kelly green woods which no doubt enhances the mystic ambience in many folds. During monsoon, the place reappears more alive with the formation of a verdant lake named as Siyal Pokhari or Siyal pond. It is a good place for jungle picnic and outdoor camping.

The real Heroes.
