Pedong is a small and buzzing Himalayan town, situated to the eastern
side, at a distance of 22km from Kalimpong. And standing at an elevation of approx 1240m(4100ft).
It is believed that pedong got its name from pine trees, which abundantly encircled this Himalayan hill
station. However, in Bhutia language, Pedong means “ A Place full of fir trees”. This mountain town
offers a beautifully organised forest, lush green valley and a panoramic view of Mt.Kanchenjunga and
Himalayan mountain range in an overwhelming way. It is divided into two parts: upper and lower
Pedong.
Pedong is one of the oldest towns in this region and has witnessed a long-standing historical
significance(The Lepcha-Bhutan feud and Anglo British war). It lies on the historic silk route that
connects India and Lhasa via Jelepla Pass. It was under the kingdom of the Last Lepcha King, and the
Bhutanese Kingdom. Later after the 1864 anglo-Bhutan war, Pedong was ceded to British India.
Before this war, a large number of people(mostly Nepalese) immigrated here and started living with
Lepchas and Bhutia who were natives of this place. Thus, a cultural blend can be seen here. Earlier
Pedong used to be a trading halt on silk-route for India-Tibet.
This Himalayan town is rich in avifauna and a paradise for ornithologists. In recent years,
there has been a considerable increase in bird population due to the increase in forest cover and the
increasing awareness regarding the ecosystem amongst the villagers. Various species of Himalayan
and lowland birds can be seen around Pedong. This place offers various activities which are mostly
nature oriented such as nature exploration, jungle hiking and picnic, Birdwatching, rock climbing,
Fisher or camping. The villages near Pedong include Sakyong, Kasyong, Dalep, Kagey, Upper Menchu
and Lower Menchu offers a great opportunity to explore.
Kashyam or Kasyaong a magical wonderland and one of the best offbeat Himalayan destinations in the region. Situated 8 away from the pedong bazaar(to the northeast side).
